SUMMARY:SatCon2 Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Satellite Constellations 2 (SATCON2) workshop will discuss how to implement mitigation strategies to minimize the impact of satellite constellations on astronomy. \n\n\n\nSATCON2\, the successor workshop to last year’s SATCON1\, has three objectives: \n\n\n\nDefine and quantify resources\, metrics\, and collaborations needed to implement the SATCON1 recommendations\, many of which will require substantial effort and funds to address.Engage astronomers and satellite operators collaboratively in exploring policy frameworks and developing policy points for operations in low Earth orbit (LEO).Increase the diversity of stakeholders and perspectives working to address both the challenges and the opportunities for astronomers\, satellite operators\, and all of humanity created by the industrialization of space.

SUMMARY:3rd Summit for Space Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Summit for Space Sustainability invites a diverse group of international experts to look across a range of economic\, security\, and environmental issues to evaluate how space capabilities can be used to meet long-standing and new global challenges. Attendees will engage in discussions about what changes may be needed to face these issues and promote the long-term sustainable use of space for all.

SUMMARY:Losing the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Live public discussion with Andy Lawrence\, Brian Eno\, Catherine Heymans\, Mark McCaughrean from ESA\, Amy Mehlman from Viasat\, and many othersThousands of satellites are now being launched into Low Earth Orbit in “mega-constellations” to give us high speed internet from space\, with the prospect of tens of thousands more\, as competition heats up. But many astronomers are furious\, as the satellites streak brightly across their images\, and space experts are worried that we are headed towards unsustainable overcrowding. Are we selling off space? Polluting our last wilderness? Losing our right to see the stars? Opening the door to adverts in the sky? Or are these things a reasonable price to pay to connect up the world to the internet\, at the fastest possible speeds? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA full recording of the Event is available on YouTube:

SUMMARY:Space Café
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability in Space: Can we protect our keyhole to the Universe? \n\n\n\nThis Space Café WebTalk will feature Prof. Thomas Schildknecht\, Director of Swiss Optical Ground Station and Geodynamics Observatory Zimmerwald and Vice-Director of Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern\,Switzerland\,in conversation with Torsten Kriening\, publisher of SpaceWatch.Global. \n\n\n\nSustainability beyond (our) planet protection \n\n\n\nHuman-caused climate change\, global pandemics\, ocean acidification and species extinctions may eventually threaten the collapse of humanity\, while others argue that for political or economic reasons we should allow industrial development to continue without restrictions. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCan we afford that? \n\n\n\nWhat role plays space? \n\n\n\nCan we still protect this keyhole into the universe? \n\n\n\nWhat is sustainability for us? \n\n\n\n[N.B. SUMMARY:Sandpit - SSA Data Management\, Security and Ethics
DESCRIPTION:How we collect\, manage\, analyse and distribute data has historically been ignored. However\, as orbital population rapidly grows it is an increasing focus of the SSA community and cannot rely on the analogy of “always done it that way”. Following on from the SSA Data Management virtual workshop hosted by the Royal Observatory\, Edinburgh\, in November 2020\, the aim of the sandpit was to facilitate a deeper discussion on standards for data management\, norms of behaviour and ensuring/enabling the responsible use of space.

SUMMARY:Workshop - SSA Data Management
DESCRIPTION:This event will cover a variety of work related to various aspects of dealing with the “data of space”\, such as collection and storage\, validation\, analysis\, and distribution. The aim is to generate discussion about these topics\, looking at both the present situation and future provision\, and identify areas for deeper discussion and research that could form the focus of one or more sandpits. It is expected that this could generate opportunities for academic research\, potentially funded through GNOSIS.
